At The Lodge, we’re often asked what activities are available for kids. We highly recommend trying geocaching. Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt. Best of all – it’s free! Simply download the app, look for markers, and explore. There is a paid version of the app where you have to solve clues to unlock new markers.

Geocaching is a fun way to spend the day exploring the Eatonton area. Don’t know what geocaching is? Geocaching is a type of global treasure hunt of people looking for caches, or hidden stashes of objects. Geocaching may also be described as a series of hide-and-seek games, where hiders provide online clues for seekers. Seekers use global positioning system (GPS) devices to find hidden caches.

How to play

  • Visit https://www.geocaching.com/play and download the app on your phone
  • Create a free account in the app
  • Use the app to find the geocache location. Keep in mind these may be large or small and in most cases they will be hidden. It’s up to you to find them
  • Share your experience in the app

Hint: If you’re at the hotel, your first geocache find is really, really close.


Rock Hawk Effigy

Rock Hawk Effigy Hiking and Biking Trails

The Rock Hawk Effigy mound is an archaeological site that consists of thousands of quartzite in the shape of a large bird. It is believed that the site was constructed between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago by Woodland Indians. The Rock Hawk Park is now an outdoor classroom with hundreds of educational displays along it’s 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are also viewing towers, a beach, and other historic sites within the park.

One of the drawbacks to Lake Oconee is that most of it is residential and there are few public access points. While there is a gate fee at Oconee Springs Park, it does have outdoor activities including a beach, lakeside waterpark, and recreational areas.

Boating is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Eatonton. While you can rent kayaks and canoes at The Lodge on Lake Oconee, some guests prefer to rent jet skis, pontoon boats, ski boats, or wake boats.
